Technician clearing a kitchen sink with an electric drain snake

Kitchen sink: grease and food waste

Kitchen sinks block because of grease. It goes down liquid with the hot water, then sets further along in the pipe, where it traps rice, coffee grounds and other scraps. Over months the passage narrows until the water stops.

Boiling water may help briefly, but it does not shift a blockage several metres away, and shop-bought drain cleaners attack the seals without dissolving set grease. If you have used one, tell the technician.

He removes the trap, then feeds an electric drain snake into the pipe. The spiral follows the bends, reaches the blockage, breaks it up and pulls it back. He then flushes with hot water and checks the sink drains at full flow.

Plumber refitting the trap under a sink

Trap, waste and leaks after a blockage

A blocked sink puts the waste under pressure. Water pushes on the trap joints, which often start leaking: a damp cupboard under the sink is a classic sign of a blockage further along.

After clearing, the plumber refits the trap with new washers, checks the waste outlet and the dishwasher hose connection, and makes sure everything stays dry with the sink draining at full flow.

In the bathroom, a washbasin blocks mainly with hair and soap in the trap. Cleaning the trap is usually enough; if not, the technician clears the pipe beyond with a smaller snake.

A sink that drains well but smells is a different problem: a dirty trap or a vent issue. The technician can deal with it during the same visit.

High-pressure jetting of a drain for a restaurant kitchen

Professional kitchens and repeated blockages

In restaurants, canteens and apartment buildings, kitchen waste pipes take a lot of grease and block regularly. Clearing the blockage each time is not enough: the whole pipe needs jetting.

The technician scours the pipe with a high-pressure jetter, which removes grease along the full length and restores the original diameter. For businesses, it can be combined with emptying the grease trap.

If blockages keep coming back at the same place, a camera inspection shows whether a sag or a badly connected joint is to blame.

Camera inspection of a waste pipe that keeps blocking

A sink that keeps blocking

If your sink blocks again a few weeks after being cleared, the pipe probably has a defect: a section with too little fall, a sag where grease collects, a badly made joint or an old pipe narrowed by scale.

After clearing, the technician can pass a small camera through the waste pipe. He sees exactly where the problem is and how far it is from the sink, without opening walls or floors at random.

He then suggests the right fix: regular jetting, replacing a short section of pipe or changing the fall. You decide with the images and the price in hand.

Keeping your sink flowing

No grease down the sink

Let cooking fat cool and put it in the bin, or wipe pans with paper first.

A strainer in the plug hole

It catches food scraps before they go down.

Hot water after washing up

A minute of hot water helps carry soap and light grease away.

Clean the trap

Every few months in the bathroom, to remove hair before it forms a plug.

Act early

A sink that drains more slowly than usual is easier to clear than one that is completely blocked.

Dishwasher hose

Make sure the dishwasher drain hose loops up under the worktop, so dirty water cannot flow back into the machine.

Frequently asked questions

How can I unblock a sink myself?

Clean the trap under the sink, then try a plunger with the overflow covered. If the water still stands, the blockage is further along: call us on 0477 03 88 98.

Do caustic drain cleaners work?

Rarely on a real grease blockage, and they damage seals and old pipes. They are also dangerous if a technician has to open the trap afterwards.

Why does the sink gurgle when the washing machine empties?

The shared waste is partly blocked: the machine's water cannot pass fast enough and pushes air back up through the sink.

Will you need to open the wall?

Almost never. The snake reaches the blockage through the trap or an access point.

How much does it cost?

It depends on where the blockage is. The price is given before the work.

Do you come at weekends?

Yes, 7 days a week. Any extra charge is quoted on the phone.

Do you clear grease traps for restaurants?

Yes, we jet kitchen drains and can empty grease traps with a vacuum tanker.
