Old floor-standing oil boiler in a plant room

When should you replace your boiler?

There is no fixed age, but some signs do not lie: breakdowns every winter, parts no longer made, a leaking boiler body, consumption rising despite servicing, or a service certificate noting combustion that cannot be set right.

A conventional boiler of twenty-five or thirty years is far less efficient than a modern appliance. Even if it still works, replacing it before it fails lets you choose when the work happens rather than suffer it in mid-winter.

The engineer examines the appliance, the system and your bills, and tells you frankly whether a repair is still worthwhile. If he recommends replacement, he explains why and which solutions suit your home.

Setting up and testing the combustion of a new condensing boiler

Replacing with a condensing boiler

In most homes on mains gas, the simplest option remains a condensing boiler. It recovers heat from the water vapour in the flue gases and uses noticeably less fuel than an old conventional boiler.

Replacement often requires adapting the flue, which must withstand condensation, and providing a condensate drain. The engineer checks this during the visit and includes it in the quote.

On the day, he drains the system, removes the old boiler, fits the new one, flushes the circuit and adds a filter if needed. He finishes with commissioning, a combustion analysis and setting the heating curve.

Heat pump indoor unit with built-in hot water cylinderAir-to-water heat pump installed against a house

Switching to a heat pump

An air-to-water heat pump can replace a boiler in a sufficiently insulated house. It draws heat from the outside air and transfers it to the water in the radiators or underfloor heating, and to a hot water cylinder.

Everything depends on the water temperature your home needs in very cold weather. The engineer calculates it: with well-sized radiators or underfloor heating, the heat pump works very well; otherwise a hybrid system that keeps a backup boiler may be better suited.

The installation includes the outdoor unit, the indoor unit or hydraulic module, the cylinder and the electrical connections. Regional grants are often higher for this type of appliance: we explain the conditions.

Pellet boiler with its silo in a plant room

Replacing with a pellet boiler

For a house without mains gas, with an old oil boiler and radiators that need hot water, a pellet boiler is often the closest thing to what you already have.

It takes the place of the old boiler, and the oil tank often frees enough space for a pellet store. Feeding and ignition are automatic; you just empty the ash pan from time to time.

The engineer studies delivery access, storage volume, the flue and the radiator connection. He also handles the old tank, which must be emptied, cleaned and decommissioned or removed according to your region's rules.

What a replacement includes

A serious replacement quote is about more than the price of the appliance. Here is what we include and check.

Removal and disposal

The old boiler is taken out and disposed of, the site left clean.

Flue

Adapted or lined for the new boiler if needed.

System flush

So sludge from the old system does not damage the new appliance.

Controls

Programmable or smart room thermostat, and outdoor sensor where useful.

Commissioning

Settings, combustion analysis, explanations and the appliance documents.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a boiler replacement take?

Gas to gas, usually one day, sometimes two if the flue or circuit needs adapting. A heat pump or pellet boiler takes longer: the duration is in the quote.

Can I keep my radiators?

With a condensing boiler, almost always. With a heat pump, it depends on their size: the survey checks room by room.

Can I still replace with an oil boiler?

Regional rules increasingly restrict oil. We tell you what is allowed in your case before suggesting a solution.

Are there grants?

Yes, regions offer grants for certain efficient appliances, under changing conditions. We explain those that may apply and the documents needed.

What happens to the old boiler and tank?

We take the boiler away. The oil tank must be emptied, cleaned and decommissioned or removed by a specialist company: we explain how.

How do I get a quote?

Request a quote via the form, book a visit online or call 0477 03 88 98.

Do you service the new boiler afterwards?

Yes, yearly servicing with a certificate and repairs 7 days a week.
