Emergency repair of wall-hung gas boilers

Most emergency calls concern a wall-hung gas boiler in fault: ignition failure, lockout, low pressure, seized pump or no hot water. The engineer brings his test equipment and the parts that fail most often.

On site he reads the error code and fault history, takes measurements, then tells you the cause and the price. A large share of faults are fixed in a single visit.

If a specific part has to be ordered, he puts the boiler into a temporary mode where it is safe to do so, so you have some heat or hot water, and comes back to fit the part as soon as it arrives from our suppliers.

Technician carrying out an emergency repair on an oil boiler burner

Oil boilers and burners

With an oil boiler, the emergency call often follows an empty tank or a delivery: sediment from the bottom blocks the filter and the burner locks out. A worn nozzle or a dirty photocell also bring on the red light.

The technician replaces the filter and nozzle, bleeds the line, cleans the photocell and adjusts the burner. He then checks the combustion so the boiler does not lock out again straight away.

While you wait, do not press the reset button repeatedly: unburnt oil builds up and makes the next start dangerous. If your tank is outside or in a cold room, oil can thicken in hard frost and block the filter: the technician can advise a suitable filter or better pipe insulation.

Shared plant room of an apartment building

Apartment buildings and shared plant rooms

When the plant room of an apartment building fails, every resident is left without heating and often without hot water. Our engineers respond to managing agents, property managers and owners, outside office hours too.

First they get the heating going again, even partially, by restarting a boiler in cascade or bypassing a pump where it is safe. Then they deal with the cause: boiler, burner, pump, controls, expansion vessel.

The managing agent receives a clear report of what was done and what still needs planning.

Technician carrying out an emergency heat pump repair

Heat pumps too

More and more homes are heated by a heat pump. It can fail in winter too: outdoor unit covered in ice, error code, stopped fan or a backup heater running all the time.

First check the heat pump's breaker has not tripped and that nothing is blocking the outdoor unit, such as snow, leaves or a cover. Note the error code before calling.

Our technicians repair air-to-water heat pumps from the major manufacturers, the same way as a boiler: diagnosis, price first, repair and job sheet.

What to do while you wait

A few simple steps limit the discomfort and help the engineer.

Smell gas?

Do not touch switches, close the gas, open the windows, leave the house and call your network operator's emergency number.

Note the code

And the boiler brand: the engineer can then bring the right parts.

Check the pressure

Below 1 bar you may top up to 1.5 bar when cold.

Keep the heat in

Close doors and shutters and protect pipes at risk of freezing.

One reset

No more: repeated resets can make the fault worse.
