Reversible wall-mounted air conditioner in a living room

Reversible wall-mounted air conditioning for homes

The most requested solution is a reversible wall-mounted unit: an indoor unit on the wall connected to an outdoor unit. In summer it cools; in spring and autumn it heats like an air-to-air heat pump, without firing up the boiler.

The technician calculates the output from the room's floor area, orientation, insulation and windows. He chooses where the outdoor unit goes (rear wall, flat roof, terrace, garden) and the most discreet route for the pipework and condensate drain.

For several rooms, a multi-split connects two to five indoor units to a single outdoor unit: fewer appliances on the facade, and each room keeps its own temperature.

Invisible: ducted air conditioning

In a renovation or a house with fine ceilings, people often prefer not to see any unit. Ducted air conditioning hides the indoor unit in a suspended ceiling, loft or cupboard and blows air through simple grilles.

It needs a more detailed design: space for the unit and ducts, routes to each room, return air, maintenance access. It fits ideally into renovation works, when ceilings are open.

The result is quiet and invisible, with an even temperature in every room served.

Offices, practices and shops

In an office, a practice or a shop, heat from computers, lighting, window displays and visitors adds to the summer heat. A ceiling cassette is built into the suspended ceiling and spreads air in four directions without taking wall space.

The technician takes account of occupancy and heat sources and proposes the number of cassettes and their position. Installation can be done outside opening hours so your business is not disrupted.

For larger buildings we install VRF/VRV systems that run many indoor units from one or a few outdoor units, and industrial air conditioning for workshops and warehouses.

VRV air conditioning outdoor units on a roofIndustrial rooftop air conditioning unit

VRV and industrial air conditioning

For office buildings, hotels, schools and large shops, a VRV system (variable refrigerant volume) is often the best choice. One or a few outdoor units on the roof run dozens of indoor units, each with its own control, and some systems can cool and heat at the same time.

For workshops, warehouses and large halls we install rooftop units and industrial air conditioning, linked to the building's ventilation. Our engineering office calculates cooling and heating loads and designs the pipework and ducts.

After installation we look after the systems with periodic maintenance and the compulsory leak checks, with a report for the building manager.

Technician cleaning the filter of an air conditioner

Air conditioning maintenance and repair

A poorly maintained air conditioner cools less, uses more power and starts to smell. Maintenance includes cleaning the filters and indoor coil, disinfecting the fan, checking the condensate drain and cleaning the outdoor unit.

If it breaks down, the technician diagnoses on site: not cooling, error code, unit leaking or noisy. He checks filters, condensate drain, fans and the refrigerant circuit, and gives the repair price beforehand.

Handling refrigerants is reserved for technicians holding the required certificate. Units above a set refrigerant quantity must have periodic leak checks.

Air conditioning for the bedroom

The bedroom is often the first room people want to cool: under the roof or facing south, sleeping in summer becomes hard.

Quiet indoor unit

Choose a model with a low noise level in night mode: the technician suggests units designed for bedrooms.

Right position

Not blowing over the bed: the unit goes on a wall where air spreads without blowing directly on you.

Right output

Too powerful and it cycles on and off; too weak and it runs all night. The calculation is done per room.

Heating too

A reversible unit also heats the bedroom in spring and autumn.

Air conditioning installation price: what does it depend on?

Every installation is different, which is why we quote after a visit. This is what sets the price.

Number of rooms

One wall unit or a multi-split for several rooms.

Type of unit

Wall-mounted, ducted, cassette or VRV.

Distance and routing

Pipe length between indoor and outdoor units and how it is concealed.

Outdoor unit position

On the ground, on a wall, on a flat roof: brackets, scaffolding or access platform.

Brand and model

Noise level, efficiency and features vary from model to model.

Frequently asked questions

Can a reversible air conditioner heat my home?

Yes, it is very efficient in spring and autumn and can top up the heating in winter. To fully replace a boiler, an air-to-water heat pump is often better.

How long does installation take?

One day for a simple wall unit; longer for a multi-split or ducted system. The duration is in the quote.

Do I need planning permission?

Often not for a discreet outdoor unit, but a unit on a street-facing wall or in an apartment building may need permission or the co-owners' agreement. Check beforehand.

How often should air conditioning be serviced?

You clean the filters yourself regularly; a full service by a technician is recommended every year.

Do you repair units installed by others?

Yes, all brands: Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba, Fujitsu. Call 0477 03 88 98 with the brand and error code.

Is a portable air conditioner a good alternative?

It helps for one room but is noisy, inefficient and blows hot air outside through a hose. A fixed unit performs far better.

Is the price known in advance?

Yes: an itemised quote after a visit for an installation, a price before repair for a breakdown.

Does air conditioning use a lot of electricity?

A recent, correctly sized unit uses a reasonable amount, especially if you close blinds during the day. Set it to 24 to 26 degrees rather than very cold: the difference with outside drives consumption.
