Technician clearing a sewer at high pressure

Clearing the sewer connection at high pressure

The house sewer connection collects all the waste water and carries it to the public sewer. When it blocks, every fitting is affected, starting with those on the ground floor and in the cellar, and the inspection chamber fills up.

The technician opens the inspection chamber or the nearest access point, locates the direction of the blockage and sends in the high-pressure hose. The nozzle travels along the pipe, breaks the blockage and scours the walls, then he flushes until water runs freely.

The usual causes are wipes, kitchen grease, sand and soil entering through a joint, and roots from nearby trees, which seek moisture and get in through the smallest crack.

Heavy blockages: the vacuum tanker

Some sewers are blocked over a great length, full of silt, sand or years of deposits. In apartment buildings, shops and restaurants, or when the inspection chamber is full to the brim, a vacuum tanker is needed.

It combines strong water pressure to loosen deposits with powerful suction to empty the chamber and remove the sludge. The site stays clean and the waste goes to a treatment facility.

The same equipment empties and cleans rainwater tanks, grease traps and septic tanks. We plan the tanker's visit around access to your street and property.

Camera inspection: why does the sewer block?

A sewer that blocks once may be an accident. If it blocks regularly, it has a defect. After clearing, the technician can run an inspection camera through the pipe and follow the image live on his screen.

He spots roots, displaced joints, cracks, sags that hold water and crushed pipes. A transmitter in the camera head lets him locate the defect from above, at the right depth.

You then know whether regular jetting is enough or a section needs repairing. The images can be shared with your insurer, managing agent or the buyer of a house.

Preventive jetting of a sewer with a trailer-mounted jetter

Preventive sewer jetting

For an old sewer, a house surrounded by trees or a business sending a lot of grease down the drain, preventive jetting avoids emergency unblocking. High pressure cleans the whole pipe before it blocks.

In apartment buildings, the managing agent can schedule jetting of the stacks and the shared sewer at regular intervals. Restaurants benefit from combining jetting with emptying the grease trap.

The technician advises on frequency based on what he saw in the pipe. You receive a job sheet describing the work done.

What to do while you wait

Stop using water

No toilets, shower, washing machine or dishwasher: every litre added can overflow.

Look in the inspection chamber

If you can do it safely: full means the sewer; empty means the blockage is before it.

Clear the access

Free the access to the inspection chamber and a space for the vehicle.

Protect the cellar

If water is coming up, raise anything that could be damaged.

Frequently asked questions

Who pays: me or the council?

The part of the sewer on your property, up to the boundary or the connection, is usually your responsibility. Beyond that it is the public sewer. A camera inspection shows where the blockage is.

How do I know if it is the sewer or just one fitting?

If only one fitting is blocked, it is its own pipe. If several drain slowly or the inspection chamber is full, it is the sewer.

Can roots block a sewer?

Yes, they enter through joints and cracks and form a real mesh. Jetting cuts them, but they grow back: the entry point must be repaired.

Do you come at night or at weekends?

Yes, 7 days a week. Call 0477 03 88 98 for the first available visit.

How much does clearing a sewer cost?

It depends on the equipment needed and the length to clear. The price is given before starting.

Do you do camera inspections before a purchase?

Yes, it is a sensible precaution before buying an older house: you know the condition of the sewer.

The public sewer in front of my house is blocked. What should I do?

If the street chamber is overflowing, contact your municipality or the sewer operator. We can check with the camera whether the blockage is on your side or in the public part.

Is a sewer smell in the cellar related?

Often: a partly blocked sewer or a dried-out floor trap let gases up. The technician checks both during the visit.
