A shower or bath mixer that drips

A thermostatic or single-lever mixer that drips from the spout or the shower head usually has a worn cartridge. Limescale makes it stick and its seals harden.

The plumber closes the water, takes the mixer apart, replaces the cartridge or the seals with parts that match the make, and descales what can be descaled.

If the mixer is old and the parts are no longer available, he suggests a new one and fits it on the same connections where possible.

Kitchen tap and flexible hoses

Water under the kitchen sink often comes from the flexible hoses that feed the tap. They age, especially in hard water, and can burst.

The plumber replaces the hoses and checks the stop valves under the sink, which often stick after years without being used.

For a kitchen tap that drips or turns badly, he replaces the cartridge or the whole tap, depending on its condition.

Basin taps and old taps

Old two-handle taps have washers that wear out; changing the washer or the head stops the drip.

On a basin, the drip can also come from the pop-up waste or the connection under the basin rather than from the tap itself.

The plumber checks everything around the basin before replacing anything.

Which leak, which part?

Drip at the spout with the tap closed: cartridge or washer. Water at the foot of the tap: the O-rings of the body or spout.

Water under the sink or basin: flexible hoses, stop valves or the waste. Unstable temperature: a worn thermostatic cartridge or a check valve.

A handle that is stiff or forces: a cartridge full of scale. A tap that whistles: a loose part or a narrowed passage.

What you can do while waiting

Close the stop valve under the sink or basin, or the main stopcock if there is none. Put a bowl under the leak.

Take a photo of the tap and of what is under it, with the make if you can see it. Send it on WhatsApp: the plumber can bring the right part.

Do not force a stiff handle; you risk breaking the cartridge.

How the repair goes

Send a photo or call us. The office gives you the call-out cost and books a time.

On site, the plumber tells you whether a repair is enough or the tap should be replaced, and the cost of each option.

You receive the job sheet and the invoice from Service Technic Belgium.

Choosing a new tap

When the tap must be replaced, the plumber helps you choose one that fits the existing holes and connections, so there is no extra work on the basin or the worktop.

In hard water, a model with easily available cartridges and an aerator that can be descaled saves trouble later. A thermostatic mixer in the shower keeps the temperature steady and is safer for children.

You can buy the tap yourself or let the plumber supply it; either way he checks it before fitting.

Frequently asked questions

Is a dripping tap urgent?

Not urgent, but it wastes water. Close the stop valve and book a repair.

Repair or replace the tap?

A cartridge or seal is enough most of the time. If the tap is old or parts are unavailable, a new one is more sensible.

Can you fit a tap I bought myself?

Yes, as long as it fits the existing connections; we check it on site.

Water under my sink: is it the tap?

Often it is the flexible hoses or a stop valve. The plumber checks everything under the sink.

How much does a tap repair cost?

The call-out cost is given on the phone; the repair cost on site, before the work.

Do you repair thermostatic mixers?

Yes, of the common makes, by replacing the cartridge or the seals.
