A heat pump in a Brussels town house

Many Brussels homes are deep terraced houses on three or four floors, built before 1940, with high ceilings and single-glazed windows that have been replaced over time. A heat pump works well there on one condition: the house must keep its heat.

With uninsulated walls, old windows and small radiators, the heat pump has to produce very hot water. It then uses a lot of electricity and the electric back-up kicks in often.

So we start with a survey: floor area, insulation, radiators, gas consumption over the last winters. That survey tells whether a heat pump makes sense on its own or alongside the existing boiler.

Radiators, underfloor heating and water temperature

A heat pump likes lukewarm water. With underfloor heating or large radiators it runs at 35 to 45 °C and stays economical.

With the original cast-iron radiators it can be enough if the house has been insulated; otherwise a few radiators in the coldest rooms are replaced by larger ones.

We calculate room by room what is needed, so you do not replace every radiator when three would do.

Where to put the outdoor unit

In a narrow street in Saint-Gilles or Schaerbeek, the front façade is not the place. The outdoor unit usually goes in the garden, the courtyard or on a flat roof, on an anti-vibration support.

Noise for the neighbours, defrost water in winter and free air flow around the unit all have to be considered. Brussels rules on noise and, in some streets, on façades apply.

In a block of flats the co-ownership must agree: we help you prepare the file with plans and the unit's data sheet.

Hybrid heat pump

When the gas boiler is recent and the house is not yet insulated, a hybrid heat pump is often a good compromise.

The heat pump heats while the weather is mild, the boiler takes over in deep cold. The controller picks the cheaper source automatically according to the outdoor temperature.

It is also a way to move step by step: insulate the roof first, then the walls, and let the heat pump do more of the work every year.

Yearly servicing

A heat pump needs a check every year: cleaning the outdoor coil, checking the water circuit pressure, the filters, the hot water cylinder and the settings.

In Brussels, leaves from street trees, dust from building sites and pigeons on flat roofs foul the outdoor unit's fins quickly. A dirty unit loses efficiency without anyone noticing.

We also check the heating curve: a curve set too high is the first cause of electricity bills that are too high.

Breakdowns and repairs

Flow error, no heating, lukewarm hot water, an outdoor unit covered in ice: we repair the common brands, including Daikin Altherma, Vaillant aroTHERM, Mitsubishi Ecodan, Panasonic Aquarea, Viessmann Vitocal and LG Therma V.

The engineer measures before replacing anything: water flow, pressures, sensors, communication between the units. You know what he found and what the repair costs before he starts.

Note the code shown on the controller and send a photo on WhatsApp: it saves time on site.

What we often see in Brussels

Uninsulated houses

Heat pump alone too small.

Small radiators

Water too hot required.

Electric back-up

Running too often.

Dirty outdoor units

Leaves and city dust.

Before you call us

How a visit works

1

You call or book

Describe the problem; a photo of the unit or of the code on the display, sent on WhatsApp, helps the technician prepare.

2

Call-out cost first

The office tells you what the visit costs and when the technician will come, before anyone sets off.

3

Your agreement first

On site, the technician explains what he found and what the repair costs, then waits for your yes. Job sheet and invoice at the end.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover all of Brussels?

Yes, all 19 municipalities of the Brussels-Capital Region and the surrounding areas.

Is a heat pump suitable for an old Brussels house?

Sometimes on its own, often together with the boiler (hybrid). It depends on insulation and radiators, which we look at before proposing anything.

Do I have to replace all my radiators?

Rarely. A room-by-room calculation often shows that two or three larger radiators are enough.

My electricity bill went up with the heat pump. Why?

Often a heating curve set too high or an electric back-up badly set. A check of the settings solves most cases.

Does a heat pump need servicing?

Yes, once a year: outdoor unit, filters, pressure, cylinder and settings.

Do you repair heat pumps fitted by other installers?

Yes, the common brands: Vaillant, Daikin, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Viessmann, LG, Atlantic and others.

How do I book?

Call 0477 03 88 98, send us a WhatsApp message or book online with the « Book an appointment » button. Tell us the municipality and, in a few words, what is going on.
