Riello boiler repair

Every heating engineer knows Riello for its oil burners, fitted to many floor-standing boilers. The brand also makes wall-hung condensing gas boilers such as the Residence Condens and the Family Condens, which display their faults as AL followed by two digits.

An AL10 means the ignition attempts have run out without a flame. An AL20 tells you the limit thermostat has tripped. An AL40 or AL41 reports water pressure that is too low. On an oil burner, it is a lockout lamp on the control box that lights up instead.

Our engineer tests the ignition, the flame sensor, the temperature sensors, the pressure and the fuel supply. He tells you what he found and the price of the repair before doing it.

Engineer servicing a gas boiler

Servicing a Riello boiler or burner

A well-maintained Riello oil burner runs for years: new nozzle, clean filter, correctly set electrodes and a clean photocell. Without servicing, it goes into lockout more and more often.

On a Riello wall-hung gas boiler, the service includes cleaning the exchanger and the burner, checking the condensate trap and a combustion analysis. You receive the service attestation.

The technician also notes the last faults displayed: a repeated AL10 or an AL40 that returns every month are signs to deal with before winter.

Riello error code table (wall-hung gas boilers)

These codes apply to recent Riello wall-hung boilers with an "AL" display. Riello oil burners have no screen: their control box lights up red. In both cases, note what you see and call us.

CodeMeaningWhat the technician checks
AL10Ignition attempts used up: no flame (or blocking caused by condensate)Gas supply, electrode, condensate drain.
AL11Parasitic flame: a flame is detected when there should be noneElectrode, circuit board.
AL20Limit thermostat tripped (overheating)Water circulation, circulating pump, flow sensor.
AL40Water pressure too low for several minutes: blockingSystem pressure, leak, expansion vessel.
AL41Water pressure too low: shutdownPressure, pressure sensor.
AL42Water pressure sensor faultPressure sensor and wiring.
AL60Domestic hot water sensor faultHot water sensor: the boiler heats but hot water is unstable.
AL71Flow sensor fault (open or short circuit)Flow sensor and wiring.

Code not in this table: call us, our technician knows it.

Smell of gas? Do not touch any switch, open the windows, leave the house and call 112 from outside. If an oil burner is in lockout, leave it as it is and call us: the technician looks at the nozzle, the filter and the photocell.

Typical Riello faults

No flame (AL10)

Dirty electrode or flame sensor, insufficient gas, condensate that no longer drains.

Pressure (AL40, AL41, AL42)

Leak in the system, faulty expansion vessel or pressure sensor.

Overheating (AL20)

Seized pump or clogged circuit: the water no longer circulates enough.

Oil burner in lockout

Worn nozzle, blocked filter, oil pump or dirty photocell.

Sensors (AL60, AL71)

A failing sensor upsets the heating or the hot water.

What the technician does on your Riello

1

He identifies the appliance

Wall-hung gas boiler or oil burner: the checks are not the same.

2

He measures

Ionisation, gas or oil pressure, sensors, combustion with the analyser.

3

He repairs and adjusts

Price announced first, repair, combustion setting, job report and invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What does AL10 mean on a Riello boiler?

The ignition attempts ran out without a flame. Gas, the electrode or a blocked condensate drain can be the cause: note the code and call us.

Is code AL40 serious?

The water pressure stayed too low, so the boiler blocks to protect itself. If it keeps returning, a leak or the expansion vessel must be checked.

What does AL20 mean?

The limit thermostat has tripped: the boiler got too hot. The cause, circulation or a sensor, has to be found.

My Riello oil burner has a red lamp lit: what should I do?

It is in lockout. Note since when and call us: the cause (nozzle, filter, photocell) has to be found rather than restarting it several times.

Do you repair Riello burners fitted to other boilers?

Yes, Riello oil and gas burners, whatever the make of the boiler.

When can you come?

We offer the first available slot, often the same day depending on your town, with the price announced before the work.
