Clearing a sink drain with an electric drain snake

Sinks and basins: the electric drain snake

Kitchen drains block mainly because of grease: it runs away liquid with hot water, sets further along the pipe and traps food waste. In the bathroom, hair and soap form a plug in the basin or shower trap.

The technician removes the trap, then feeds an electric drain snake into the pipe. The spiral reaches the blockage, breaks it up and pulls it back. He then flushes with hot water and checks the flow is back to normal at full rate.

Chemical drain cleaners attack seals and old pipes and do not dissolve a real grease blockage. If you have poured some in, tell the technician so he can take the necessary precautions.

Clearing a toilet with a hand auger

Blocked toilet: the right auger

A toilet usually blocks because of wipes, sanitary products, too much paper or an object dropped into the pan. Wipes sold as flushable do not break down fast enough and pile up in the bends.

The technician uses a toilet auger with a protective sleeve that does not scratch the porcelain to reach the blockage past the pan's trap. If it is further down, he works through an access cap or another opening in the pipe.

If several fittings in the house drain slowly at the same time, the problem is not the toilet but the main drain: it must be cleared further down, towards the sewer.

Clearing a drain with high-pressure waterJetting a drain with a trailer-mounted jetter

Main drain: high-pressure jetting

When the blockage is in the pipe linking the house to the sewer, a snake is no longer enough. The technician uses a high-pressure jetter: a hose with a nozzle that sprays water backwards, pulls itself along the pipe and scours the whole wall.

Jetting removes grease, scale, sand and fine roots along the full length. It restores the pipe's original diameter, where a snake only makes a hole through the blockage.

The technician works from the inspection chamber, a rodding eye or an access cap. He then shows you the restored flow and explains where the blockage came from.

Camera inspection of a drain

Repeated blockages: camera inspection

A drain that blocks every few months has a deeper problem: back-fall, a sagging pipe, a displaced joint, roots getting in through a crack or a crushed pipe.

After clearing, the technician can push a camera through the drain. He sees the pipe's condition live on his screen, measures the distance to the defect and locates it from above.

You then know whether regular maintenance is enough or a local repair is needed, without digging up the garden at random. The images can also be used for an insurance claim or a house sale.

Signs of a blocked drain

Slow draining

Water takes longer and longer to go: the blockage is building up.

Gurgling

Air struggles to pass: noises in the sink when the washing machine empties.

Bad smells

Waste trapped in the pipe starts to ferment.

Water coming back up

Through the shower or cellar floor when another fitting drains: blockage downstream.

Several fittings affected

The problem is in the main drain, not in one trap.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a drain cleaner?

For a slight slowdown, cleaning the trap works better. Chemicals damage seals and pipes and are dangerous if a technician has to step in afterwards.

How much does unblocking a drain cost?

It depends on where the blockage is and the equipment needed. The technician gives you the price before starting. Call 0477 03 88 98.

What is the difference between a snake and a jetter?

A snake breaks through and removes a local blockage; a jetter cleans the whole inner wall of the pipe along its length.

Do you come in the evening and at weekends?

Yes, 7 days a week. Any extra charge is quoted on the phone.

How can I prevent another blockage?

No grease, wipes or food scraps down the drains, a hair catcher on the shower, and jetting of the main drain if it blocks often.

Do you do camera inspections?

Yes, when blockages repeat or to check a drain before buying a house or starting works.

The washing machine makes the sink overflow. Why?

It empties a lot of water at once. If the shared waste is partly blocked, the water cannot pass fast enough and comes out at the lowest fitting. The waste must be cleared further down.

Do you work for restaurants and shops?

Yes. Professional kitchens send a lot of grease down the drains: we clear and jet them and can empty grease traps with a vacuum tanker.
