When a drain survey makes sense

A blockage that keeps coming back to the same place despite clearing. A sewer smell in the basement with no visible cause. A damp patch in a wall, or a floor sinking above a pipe.

Also before buying an old Brussels house: the clay pipes under the basement are often a hundred years old. Knowing their condition helps you negotiate and plan the work.

And after water damage: the insurer wants to know where and why a pipe leaked. The footage shows it.

How the survey is done

The technician puts the camera in through an inspection chamber, an access cap or a removed toilet. The head has its own lights and a transmitter, and it rotates to see the whole pipe wall.

On the screen he follows the pipe metre by metre. For each defect he notes the distance from the start; with a receiver above the floor he finds the position and depth of the camera head.

If the pipe is too dirty for a clear picture, he jets it first, with your agreement.

What the camera often shows in Brussels

Roots growing through the joints of clay pipes, especially in gardens with large trees in Uccle, Watermael-Boitsfort and the Woluwes.

Sagging sections under old basements, where water stands and dirt builds up. Pipes broken during an earlier renovation, or a PVC pipe badly joined to an old one.

Sometimes a forgotten cesspit or interceptor trap slowing everything down: the camera shows where the pipe runs through it.

What you receive

You see the footage on site, explained in plain words. Afterwards you receive the recording and a report listing the defects, their distance and their depth.

The report is useful for your insurer, your landlord, the managing agent or the notary when selling. It also lets you compare quotes for a repair.

If a repair is needed, we suggest the least invasive solution: replacing a section in the right spot, or fitting a liner inside the pipe without breaking everything open.

After the survey

If the pipe is sound, you know for sure and there is nothing to do. If it is just dirty, jetting is enough, perhaps on a regular basis.

If the camera shows a serious defect, the technician explains what is urgent and what can wait.

The connection to the public sewer is the responsibility of Vivaqua; we work on the private section between your house and the street.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a drain camera inspection cost?

It depends on the length, the access and whether the pipe must be jetted first. The office tells you the cost of the call-out and the survey beforehand.

Do I get the footage?

Yes, you receive the recording and a report showing the position and depth of each defect.

Does the pipe have to be jetted first?

If it is dirty or half blocked, yes, otherwise nothing can be seen. That is done with your agreement.

Can the camera go through a toilet?

Often, after removing the toilet or through an access cap. A basement chamber is usually the best way in.

Is it worth it before buying a house?

Yes, especially for older houses. A drain report avoids expensive surprises after the sale.

Do you work in English?

Yes, our technician explains the footage and the report can be written in English, French or Dutch.
