Heating engineer testing a wall-hung gas boilerMeasurements taken on a gas boiler while tracing a fault

Tracing the fault on a gas boiler

When a gas boiler stops, the cause is nearly always on a short list of parts: the ignition electrode or flame sensor, a circulation pump that has seized over the summer, a three-way valve stuck on hot water, a blocked condensate trap, or the control board. Resetting the boiler ten times in a row fixes none of these.

The engineer starts by reading the error code and the fault history. He then measures the gas pressure, the flame current and the pump operation. Those readings let him replace the right part first time instead of swapping components at random.

Before any work begins, he explains what he found and gives you the price. If the part is not in the van, he restarts the boiler in a limited mode where it is safe to do so, so you have some warmth while the part is ordered.

Technician working on an oil-fired boilerOil-fired boiler in a plant room

Oil boiler that has locked out

With an oil boiler, the trouble often lies in the fuel supply: a nearly empty tank, a clogged filter, a dirty nozzle or a worn burner pump. The red light on the burner comes on and the boiler refuses to restart.

Check the tank gauge first. If the level is very low, sludge from the bottom may have been drawn in and blocked the filter, which then needs cleaning even after a delivery. Do not keep pressing the reset button: the burner can flood with oil and make the restart harder.

The technician checks the supply line, replaces the filter or nozzle where needed, adjusts the burner and tests the combustion. A well-tuned oil boiler burns less fuel and soots up more slowly. If the yearly service is overdue, we book it at the same time.

Heating engineer working on a radiator and its thermostatic valve

Boiler running but radiators stay cold

Sometimes the boiler runs and the taps give hot water, yet the radiators stay cold. The burner is fine in that case: the problem is in the heating circuit. The usual suspects are the room thermostat, the pump, the three-way valve or thermostatic valves that have stuck.

If only one radiator is cold, its thermostatic head has often jammed after the summer: the small pin under the head no longer moves. If the top of the radiators is cold, there is air in the system. If it is the radiators furthest from the boiler, the circuit is unbalanced or loaded with sludge.

The engineer frees or replaces the valves, bleeds the radiators, restores the pressure and rebalances the system. When the water comes out black and heavy, he suggests a power flush, which brings the heat back to every room and protects the boiler.

Technician repairing a heat pump

Heat pump that no longer heats

A heat pump fails in different ways: an outdoor unit covered in ice, an error code on the screen, a fan that has stopped, or an electric backup heater that runs all the time and pushes up the electricity bill.

First check that the heat pump's circuit breaker has not tripped and that nothing is blocking the outdoor unit (leaves, snow, a cover). Write down the error code: it points the technician towards a sensor, the board or the refrigerant circuit, so he arrives with the right parts.

Our technicians work on air-to-water heat pumps from the major manufacturers. They check the refrigerant pressures, the defrost cycle, the sensors and the heating curve setting, which often explains a lukewarm house even though the unit keeps running.

Five checks before you call

These checks take a few minutes and need no tools. Sometimes they save a call-out; otherwise they help the engineer work faster.

Power

Is the boiler display on? Look at the switch next to the appliance and at the fuse or breaker that feeds it in the fuse box.

Thermostat

Are the batteries flat? Is it set to holiday, night or frost mode? Raise the setpoint by a few degrees and wait a few minutes.

Pressure

On most wall-hung boilers the gauge should read between 1 and 2 bar when cold. Below that, the boiler protects itself and stops: our page on low boiler pressure explains how to top up.

Gas or oil

Does your gas hob work? Is the gas valve open? Is there oil left in the tank?

Error code

Note the code and try a single reset. If the code comes back, do not keep trying: call us with the code and the boiler brand.

How the repair works

1

You call us

Tell us the appliance brand, the error code and what you have already checked. We offer the first available visit, often the same day.

2

Diagnosis and price

The engineer finds the cause, explains it and gives you the repair price before he starts. Nothing is replaced without your approval.

3

Repair and paperwork

He carries out the repair, restarts the heating, checks that everything works and hands you a job sheet, followed by the invoice.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do first when the heating stops?

Check the power, the thermostat, the water pressure and the gas or oil supply. Note the error code and reset once. If the boiler still will not start, call us on 0477 03 88 98.

I have hot water but no heating. Is that serious?

No, it is rather a good sign: the burner works. The cause is usually the thermostat, the circulation pump or the three-way valve, all parts the engineer can replace on site.

I can smell gas. What should I do?

Do not touch any switch or make a flame, close the gas valve, open the windows, leave the property and call your network operator's emergency number. The engineer comes afterwards for the repair.

Do you come out in the evening and at weekends?

Yes, our engineers work 7 days a week, including evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. Any extra charge is quoted on the phone before we set off.

Do you repair all boiler brands?

Yes: Vaillant, Bulex, Viessmann, Buderus, Remeha, Junkers, Saunier Duval, ACV, Atag and the other common brands, gas and oil, as well as heat pumps.

How much will the repair cost?

It depends on the part that needs replacing. The engineer gives you the price after the diagnosis and before the repair, so you decide knowing the amount.

Our boiler keeps breaking down. Should we replace it?

Not necessarily. If it is over fifteen to twenty years old and the faults keep coming back, the engineer will tell you honestly whether a repair still makes sense, and you can ask for a quote for a condensing boiler or a heat pump.

Do you speak English?

Yes. Our office answers in English, French and Dutch, and quotes, job sheets and invoices can be issued in English.
