Cleaning the combustion chamber and flue ways

Burning heating oil leaves a thin layer of soot on the walls of the boiler. A single millimetre of soot noticeably slows the transfer of heat to the heating water: the boiler burns more fuel for the same comfort, and part of the heat goes up the chimney.

During the service the engineer opens the boiler door, brushes the flue ways and the combustion chamber, vacuums the deposits and checks the seals and insulation. He also checks the flue pipe to the chimney and the draught stabiliser if there is one.

A clean boiler uses less, starts without jolts and leaves less smell in the boiler room. If the engineer notices a crack, corrosion or a hardened seal, he tells you and gives you the repair cost before doing it.

Servicing the oil burner

The burner is the heart of the installation: it sprays the oil into fine droplets and mixes it with air before lighting it. The burner service includes replacing the nozzle and cleaning the combustion head, the fan and the flame detection cell.

The engineer checks the gap of the ignition electrodes, the pump pressure, the oil line filter and the condition of the flexible hoses. A cracked hose or a filter full of water can cause a lockout in the middle of winter; they are replaced with your agreement.

He finally checks the heating circuit: pressure, expansion vessel, circulating pump, safety valve and controls. A badly set thermostat or a faulty outdoor sensor often costs more than a dirty burner.

Combustion analysis and attestation

Once the boiler is clean and the burner refitted, the engineer measures the combustion with an electronic analyser placed in the flue. He reads the flue temperature, the CO2, the carbon monoxide, the smoke number and the draught.

These measurements let him set the burner precisely: enough air for a clean flame, not so much that it cools the boiler. The calculated combustion efficiency is written on the attestation with the other values.

You receive the service attestation on the day. Keep it: your insurer may ask for it, as may a buyer or the regional administration. It is also a reference to compare from one year to the next.

Burner in lockout: repairing an oil boiler

The red light on the burner comes on and the house cools down? A lockout means the burner tried to start without seeing a flame. Reset once. If it locks out again, do not try again: unburnt oil builds up in the combustion chamber.

The usual causes are an empty or almost empty tank, a filter blocked by sludge or water, a dirty nozzle, a dirty flame cell, a tired oil pump or an ignition transformer at the end of its life. The engineer checks them in order, from the simplest to the most likely.

The call-out cost is given on the phone, and the cost of a part before it is replaced. A breakdown often happens on a boiler that missed its service: it is a good moment to do it at the same time.

Why service an oil boiler every year

Safety: carbon monoxide and flue problems are spotted by the measurement. Less oil: a clean boiler and a well-set burner burn less for the same warmth, and you see it on the tank level.

Fewer breakdowns: nozzle, filter and hoses replaced before they let you down. Insurance: the attestation is often asked for after a claim.

Environment: a well-adjusted burner produces less soot and fewer emissions. Chimney sweeping is a separate job; the engineer tells you if the flue looks dirty.

How the service goes

Book online or by phone and choose your slot. Clear the access to the boiler and the tank, and have the last attestation ready.

The service takes about an hour to an hour and a half depending on the boiler and how dirty it is. The engineer tells you what he saw and what to watch.

If a repair is needed, he gives you the cost first and only does it with your agreement. You leave with the attestation, the job sheet and the invoice.

Frequently asked questions

Is an oil boiler service compulsory every year?

Yes, in all three Regions. You receive a attestation to keep.

How much does an oil boiler service cost?

The cost is given when you book, before the visit.

Does the chimney need sweeping too?

Yes, it is a separate obligation. The engineer tells you if the flue is dirty and advises on frequency.

Do you service all makes?

Yes: Buderus, Viessmann, Vaillant, De Dietrich, Weishaupt and many others, and burners of all makes.

How long does the service take?

About an hour to an hour and a half, depending on the boiler and how dirty it is.

My boiler breaks down in winter: do you come?

Yes. The call-out cost is given on the phone before anyone sets off.

How do I book?

Call 0477 03 88 98, send us a WhatsApp message or book online with the « Book an appointment » button. Tell us the municipality and, in a few words, what is going on.
