Technician clearing a blocked toilet with a hand drain snake

Blocked toilets

A toilet that fills up to the rim, empties very slowly or overflows when you flush is the most common call we get. Usually the cause is close: too much paper, wet wipes, cotton buds, a child's toy or a build-up of scale in the trap of the pan.

The technician first protects the floor, then works with a toilet plunger or a hand drain snake designed for porcelain, so the glaze is not scratched. If the blockage sits further down, in the soil pipe or the connection to the stack, he uses a longer machine snake.

Once the water runs freely, he flushes several times to check the whole run. If the same toilet blocks every few weeks, the problem is often a pipe with too little slope or a wall-hung frame fitted badly: he explains what he sees and what can be done about it.

Kitchen sinks, basins, showers and baths

In a kitchen, grease and food scraps stick to the inside of the waste pipe and harden over time. In a bathroom, it is hair, soap and limescale. Water drains slower and slower, smells appear, then one day nothing goes down at all.

The technician dismantles and cleans the trap, then sends an electric drain snake into the waste pipe to break up and pull out the blockage. For a walk-in shower or a bath, he works through the waste outlet or the access hatch without damaging tiles or sealant.

Chemical drain cleaners are best avoided: they rarely dissolve a real blockage, attack old pipes and seals, and make the work dangerous for the person who comes afterwards. If you have already poured some in, simply tell the technician so he can protect himself.

Sewers and main drains: high-pressure jetting

When several fittings block at the same time, when water comes up through the floor drain in the cellar or the inspection chamber is full, the problem is in the main drain that runs to the public sewer. Roots, grease, sand and broken pipes are the usual causes.

For these pipes, a snake is not enough. The technician uses a high-pressure jetter: a hose with a special nozzle that cuts through the blockage and then scours the whole pipe wall clean. Depending on the access, the jetter is carried in a van, on a trailer or on a truck.

In older houses and buildings, the drain often has a sewer trap (an interceptor) near the front wall. It catches a lot of dirt and is frequently the place where everything stops. Cleaning it properly is part of the job.

Camera inspection when the blockage keeps coming back

A drain that blocks again and again is rarely bad luck. A camera inspection lets the technician see inside the pipe: roots coming through a joint, a broken or sagging section, a pipe that was crushed during building works, or a wrong slope.

He records the images, locates the problem and measures its depth, so that any repair is done in the right place and only where needed. You receive the findings and, if work is needed, a clear quote.

An inspection is also useful before buying a house, after flooding, or when a drain smells without being blocked.

No wipes in the toilet

Even the ones sold as flushable do not break down in the drain.

Grease in the bin

Let cooking fat cool and throw it away instead of pouring it down the sink.

A strainer in the shower

It stops hair before it reaches the trap.

Hot water once a week

A kettle of hot water helps keep kitchen waste pipes clear.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can a drain technician come?

We offer the first available visit, often the same day, depending on your area and the time of your call.

How much does drain unblocking cost?

It depends on where the blockage is, the access and the equipment needed. The technician gives you the price on site before he starts.

Do you come in the evening and at weekends?

Yes, 7 days a week. Any evening or weekend charge is quoted before we set off.

Can a blocked drain damage my home?

Yes. Water that cannot leave can soak floors, walls and the cellar. Stop using the blocked fittings and call us.

Do you use chemicals?

No. We clear drains mechanically, with a snake or a high-pressure jetter, which is safer for the pipes and for you.

Why does my drain keep blocking?

Roots, a broken or sagging pipe, a wrong slope or grease build-up. A camera inspection shows the exact cause.

Who pays in a rented flat or a shared building?

It depends on the cause and the lease or the building rules. Our job sheet describes what was found, which helps tenant, landlord and managing agent agree.

Which languages do you speak?

English, French and Dutch; job sheets and invoices can be issued in all three.
