Where the outdoor unit can go in Brussels

Most Brussels homes are terraced town houses or apartments in blocks, often with a listed or uniform street front. An outdoor unit on the front façade is rarely a good idea and may need a planning permit from the municipality.

The usual places are the rear façade, a terrace, a courtyard, a flat roof or a light well, with anti-vibration mounts and enough space around the unit for air to circulate. We also look at where the condensate water will drain and at the noise for the neighbours.

In a building with several owners, the co-ownership must agree. We prepare a short description of the works, the unit's data sheet and its noise level for the managing agent or the general meeting.

Which system for which home

For one or two rooms, a reversible wall unit connected to an outdoor unit is the simplest choice: it cools in summer and heats in mid-season like an air-to-air heat pump.

For several rooms, a multi-split connects up to four or five indoor units to a single outdoor unit, which keeps the façade or roof tidier. In a renovation with a suspended ceiling, a ducted unit hides everything except the grilles.

Offices and shops often go for ceiling cassettes or ducted systems. We work out the cooling need room by room, taking into account sun exposure, glazing, roof insulation and the number of people.

Installation step by step

It starts with a visit: rooms to cool, route of the refrigerant pipes, position of both units, power supply and drainage. You then receive a written quote with the equipment and the work described line by line.

On installation day the engineer fixes the units, runs and insulates the pipes, connects the drain and the power, then evacuates the circuit and checks it for leaks before releasing the refrigerant.

He tests the system in cooling and heating mode, shows you the remote control and the filters, and leaves the documents of the installation. The work on the refrigerant circuit is done by a qualified refrigeration engineer.

Servicing your air conditioning

Dust, pollen and kitchen grease clog the filters and the indoor coil; leaves and city grime cover the outdoor unit. A clogged unit cools less, uses more electricity and starts to smell.

During a service the engineer cleans the filters and the indoor unit, disinfects the condensate tray, clears the drain, cleans the outdoor coil, checks the pressures and the electrical connections.

Book it in spring, before the first hot week: that is when most breakdowns show up and when diaries fill up fastest.

Repairs on common brands

Warm air instead of cold, water dripping down the wall, a code flashing on the remote: we repair Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, LG, Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba, Fujitsu and other common brands, whether we installed them or not.

The engineer looks for simple causes first (filters, drain, sensor, power) before touching the refrigerant. A unit short of refrigerant has a leak: it is found and repaired before any recharge.

Send a photo of the code or the flashing lights on WhatsApp: it helps the engineer bring the most likely parts.

Air conditioning or heat pump?

A reversible air conditioner is an air-to-air heat pump. In a well-insulated Brussels flat it can provide much of the heating in spring and autumn, but it does not heat radiators or hot water.

If you are thinking about replacing a gas boiler, an air-to-water heat pump is the other option: our heat pump page for Brussels explains the difference.

Whatever you choose, the engineer explains the options for your home before the quote, without pushing a particular brand.
